Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, House of Blues, July 7
There are three types of OMD fans. Those who favor perfect pop anthem 鈥淚f You Leave.鈥 Those who favor perfect electropop gem 鈥淓nola Gay.鈥 Those who love both and will talk your ear off about how 1985 LP 鈥淐rush鈥 is a lost masterpiece. Be the third type on July 7.
鈥淐olour by Numbers,鈥 Culture Club, reissue
New Wave? Yes. Soul? Yes! Long out of print, this vinyl reissue reminds that Culture Club was the first great soul act of the 鈥80s. The band鈥檚 second LP is full of originals that sounded like a modern takes on Motown. Sure, 鈥淜arma Chameleon鈥 is awesome. But go and listen to the quiet storm of deep cut 鈥淐hanging Every Day鈥 and the Stevie Wonder-inspired 鈥淐hurch of the Poison Mind鈥 featuring guest vocalist and secret weapon Helen Terry.
鈥淩emain in Light鈥 redux, the Wilbur, July 25
Talking Heads guitarist/keyboardist Jerry Harrison and guitarist Adrian Belew get back to the light with more tour dates celebrating the Heads鈥 1980 album. To recreate the landmark record, the pair enlisted an 11-piece band from former members of disco revivalists Turkuaz with a dash of Belew鈥檚 solo group.
鈥淐rowded House,鈥 Crowded House, reissue
New Wave? You bet. The best Beatles album not made by the Beatles? Quite possibly yes. With a tunefulness and experimental streak that鈥檚 downright reminiscent of 鈥淩ubber Soul,鈥 Australian-New Zealand import took over the States with this 1986 album. Hits 鈥淒on鈥檛 Dream It鈥檚 Over鈥 and 鈥淪omething So Strong鈥 are immaculate. But dig deeper and you鈥檒l find a drunken circus music bridge in 鈥淗ole in the River鈥 and the dreamy, wandering melodic asides in 鈥淲orld Where You Live.鈥
The Church, Somerville Theatre, Aug. 1
The Church never got its due. The Aussie band was like another Echo & the Bunnymen. It predated and predicted everyone from the Smiths to the Strokes. Give the crew its due at this rare Massachusetts show.
鈥淟isten Like Thieves,鈥 INXS, 40th anniversary edition
鈥淜ick鈥 gets all the credit because, well, 鈥淜ick鈥 is awesome. But 1985鈥檚 鈥淟isten Like Thieves鈥 sees the band winding up to the mega stardom it would achieve a few years later. The LP is more packed than you probably remember: 鈥淲hat You Need,鈥 鈥淭his Time,鈥 鈥淜iss the Dirt,鈥 the title track. It鈥檚 also got more range than anything the band had done to date 鈥 see the snaky, sexy 鈥淕ood + Bad Times鈥 and heavy and furious 鈥淩ed Red Sun.鈥
Richard Blade Presents Lost 80鈥檚 Live, Wang Theater, Aug. 1
The legendary DJ presents an evening where you can hear 鈥淚 Ran (So Far Away),鈥 鈥淏ig Country,鈥 鈥淭enderness,鈥 and 鈥淭urning Japanese.鈥 So many songs, so many bands (10!), so many memories.
鈥淒iscography: The Complete Singles Collection,鈥 Pet Shop Boys, reissue
No dance-pop band has dropped a collection of hits as intellectual, odd, and wonderful as Pet Shop Boys did between 1985 and 1991. It鈥檚 fascinating to follow the duo鈥檚 progress from 鈥淲est End Girls鈥 to 鈥淪uburbia鈥 to 鈥淚t鈥檚 a Sin鈥 to 鈥淏eing Boring.鈥 Not a single track misses. Everything makes you think. Everything makes you dance.
