Seems like a young legend is in the making, as Indian skipper Shubman Gill dismissed all doubts over his newly-gained captaincy with a historic double-century at Edgbaston against England in Day 3 of the second Test on Thursday.
Gill broke Mohammad Azharuddin’s record for the highest score by an Indian captain in a Test match played in England.
He eventually also surpassed the 250-run mark, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar (221) to post the highest individual score by an Indian batter in England as well.
In his second Test as India captain, which is currently underway at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Gill came out to bat at No. 4 on Wednesday and completed his double century by taking a single on the first ball of the 122nd over of India’s first innings bowled by Josh Tongue.
Gill then broke into a spirited celebration upon reaching the 200-run milestone.

The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab is the sixth overall Indian captain after MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli to score a double century in Test cricket. During his 123-match-long Test career, Kohli scored seven double centuries as India captain, whereas the other four crossed the 200-run mark once.
MAK Pataudi was the first Indian captain to score a double century in Test cricket. Pataudi remained unbeaten on 203 runs against the English team in the second innings of the match played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi in February 1964.
Now, at the age of 25 years and 298 days, Gill became the second youngest Indian captain after Pataudi (who was 23 years and 39 days old when he scored his double century) to score a double century in Test cricket.
The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab also entered his name in the history books by becoming the first Indian Test captain to score a double century in England as well as SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries.
