Drivers face fines and three points on their licence over one of the most frustrating motoring acts on our roads. Police are attempting to step up efforts to crack down on middle lane hogging, which is rife on our motorways and happens every day up and down the country. It’s one of the most routinely ignored driving rules, and many don’t actually know they are doing anything wrong. Middle lane hogging is where vehicles sit in the middle lane of the motorway when there is space in the inside lane. It can be a major cause of congestion as other cars are forced to pull into the outside lane to pass them. It’s a common sight on UK motorways, and cited among the most annoying driving habits. While some might not know they are doing anything wrong, others are ignorant and reluctant to move to the inside lane. Motorists who are caught and pulled over could be hit with 拢100 fines and three penalty points. A spokesperson for car repair experts at Bumper said: “Middle lane hogging might seem harmless to some, but it can have real consequences. “Not only can it earn you a 拢100 fine and three penalty points, but it also disrupts the natural flow of motorway traffic, causing frustration and potentially dangerous overtaking. “Staying in the left-hand lane when not overtaking is a simple rule that makes a big difference to everyone鈥檚 journey. “With more drivers heading out for summer road trips, it鈥檚 vital to brush up on motorway etiquette to avoid unnecessary penalties that could impact your insurance premiums.”
