As the world of football comes to terms with the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva , one Irish League manager has paid his own tribute to the Liverpool man. Declan Caddell saw Jota’s quality at first hand when Crusaders played Wolves in the second qualifying round of the Europa League back in 2019. Jota scored in the first leg 2-0 win at Molineux before the Premier League side ran out 4-1 winners at Seaview. Paying tribute to the Portuguese forward Caddell, who is now manager at the Crues, recalled those games and how impressive he was with Jota. “It was an incredible game to be a part of, and Diogo Jota was a standout player,” said Caddell. “His tragic passing has shocked everyone in the world of football. On behalf of myself, the coaching staff, players, and the entire Crusaders family, I offer our sincere condolences to Diogo’s teammates, friends, and loved ones.” The Spanish Civil Guard reported that the brothers were discovered deceased after their vehicle left the road near Zamora. Authorities indicated that the crash, which did not involve other vehicles, likely occurred due to a tyre blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre. Following the confirmation of Jota’s death, Liverpool released this statement: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, team-mates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
