In a chilling 999 call, a horrified hotel owner said “he’s eating her” upon discovering a 34 year old man standing over the body of a 22 year old woman he had killed in a scene reminiscent of a “horror film.” Mandy Miles, in a state of shock during her frantic emergency call, questioned the reality of the gruesome scene unfolding before her eyes as Matthew Williams savagely attacked his girlfriend and victim Cerys Yemm. The ghastly “cannibal” murder was what Mandy believed she had stumbled upon at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Argoed, near Caerphilly, South Wales, according to testimony at an inquest. She recounted Cerys’s screams to the emergency operator: “There’s a lad in the room. He’s actually eating her. It’s awful. His name is Matthew Williams and he’s in Room 7. There was screaming and screaming. Oh my God. It’s awful. I went into the room and he’s killed her. Oh my God. Is this real?”. Cerys’s inquest heard the recording of the call, revealing Williams, aged 34, had assaulted the 22 year old with a screwdriver and then tried to eat her face after they met on a night out in November 2014, reports the Express . Their first encounter was near Blackwood, as reported by Gwent Coroner’s Court. In a tragic turn of events, Williams had been released from prison just two weeks prior to the murder. 50 year old Mandy alerted the police after witnessing the horrific scene, telling the court how she unlocked the door following screams from his room at around 1am, only to be met with the sight of the waitress on her back and Williams atop her. She recounted the chilling scene, saying there was “blood everywhere” and it resembled “like a horror film”. Mandy recalled that Williams ignored her presence. “His head was down in hers. He didn’t react to my voice. I said ‘Matthew do you know what you’re doing?'” she recounted. Mandy said: “My son said ‘are you eating her?’ Even though science has shown he wasn’t – in my mind he was.” The police response to the hostel came 14 minutes after the emergency call, where they Tasered Williams, who subsequently died. The court was informed Williams, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, had been discharged from hospital fortnight prior without medication or supervision despite his history of being sectioned twice and reports of auditory hallucinations, as reported by BBC News. Sally Ann Williams, his mother, testified the family had sought medical help before the tragedy, with her son expressing paranoia and “the voices were back” shortly before Cerys’ demise. At the inquest into Cerys Yemm’s death, the jury concluded she was unlawfully killed by Williams, a verdict her parents received positively. The official cause of death for Cerys Yemm, announced by the jury spokesman, was sharp force trauma to the face and neck. The spokesperson detailed: “In the early hours of November 6, 2014 Cerys Yemm was with a companion in his room when she was attacked. He said she suffered from ” He described her injuries as “violent”. The hearing revealed that Williams, who had been in a young offenders’ institution at 15, became a “nightmare” on his return home to his mother. Williams resorted to thievery for drug money, had run-ins with the police, and ultimately ended up in foster care. His diagnosis of drug-induced paranoid schizophrenia came later on, though his mother firmly believed that prison was not the right place for her son. Rhodri Moore, his closest mate, recalled that Williams appeared alright upon initial release from prison but quickly spiralled “after the first couple days”. Rhodri recounted: “He was taking drugs on a daily basis. He said when he looked at a can of Coke he could see faces. He wasn’t very well. He was seeing things, hallucinating. He was annoyed and on edge. Depressed. “He couldn’t get any medication. His mother was trying very hard to get someone to see him. He was willing to be helped. He wanted to be helped.”
