Injured Limpopo initiates recovering in hospital

The six initiates and a traditional surgeon, who were injured after a fire engulfed their initiation school at Maake near Tzaneen in Limpopo, are recovering in hospital.

They were taken to the CN Phatudi hospital after suffering minor to severe burns.

One initiate who suffered severe burn wounds has been transferred to Litaba hospital.

Limpopo Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC Basikopo Makamu says the initiation school where the incident occurred is still operating, as it is legal.

鈥淟et me indicate that it鈥檚 an unfortunate incident that has happened, and we wish the children, together with the traditional surgeon, a speedy recovery. I personally went together with the PICC in the province 鈥 they went on different times to go and see the children.鈥

鈥淏ut I also went to the initiation school itself to understand what could have happened with this fire. I found that it鈥檚 an incident that would not necessarily or would not have been avoided.鈥

Limpopo Health spokesperson Neil Shikwambana says those injured are recovering well.

鈥淏ut for the five that are still remaining at Dr. C.N. Phatudi Hospital, which is one of our facilities, we can confirm that they are in stable condition. They have been well taken care of and we are optimistic that in the next few days they will be ready to be discharged.鈥
