This Morning stars halted the show just minutes into its latest episode to inform viewers of 鈥榬eally sad鈥 breaking news on Diogo Jota. It emerged just minutes before the ITV breakfast show went to air on Thursday morning (July 3) that Liverpool striker Diogo Jota had been killed in a car crash. The Spanish civil guard confirmed the 28-year-old Portuguese footballer was found dead alongside his brother Andre Silva, after their car went off a road near the city of Zamora. Police said no other vehicles were involved in the incident. The former Wolves player was part of Liverpool鈥檚 Premier League-winning side in the recent 2024/25 campaign, scoring six goals in 26 appearances. Jota had married his long term partner Rute Cardoso on June 22 in Portugal, having got together in 2013. The couple share three children together, two sons and a daughter who was born in November. On Wednesday (July 2), Jota and Cardoso , 28, posted video footage of their wedding, with the caption: 鈥淎 day we will never forget.鈥 With football fans around the world stunned by the news, former Goals on Sunday host Ben Shephard announced the 鈥榬eally sad鈥 news live on air. 鈥淭here鈥檚 just one breaking news story that we鈥檙e going to bring you, which is really sad, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car crash aged just 28. He was with his brother Andre Silva in the accident. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really shocking because he had just recently got married and was the father of three young children as well.鈥 Ben and his co-host Cat Deeley were then joined by contributor Nick Ferrari, as he branded the incident an 鈥榓bsolute tragedy鈥. 鈥淔ans are already gathering at Anfield and laying flowers, he was something of a cult hero. He scored a couple of crucial goals鈥 鈥淗e was a big Liverpool star, a big presence and a fan favourite. You will see a lot of grief later today at Anfield,鈥 Nick said. Meanwhile, the Portuguese Football Federation said it was 鈥榙evastated鈥 to learn of Jota and his brother鈥檚 deaths , saying it鈥檚 鈥榠rreparable losses for Portuguese football鈥. 鈥淒iogo Jota was not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents. 鈥淗e had a contagious joy and was a reference point in his own community,鈥 a spokesperson said.
