Liverpool forward, 28, dies suddenly in Spain

The Sun reports the Portuguese winger, aged 28, was involved in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, according to local media.

The accident reportedly occurred on the A52, near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria, reports Marca.

The star was reportedly in the car with his brother Andre when the vehicle went off the road.

Local paper enfoque reports his brother also died in the crash.

Jota played on the left wing for Liverpool after joining from Wolves in 2020 for a fee of 拢41 million (AU$85 million).

Jota became a key member of the Reds under Jurgen Klopp and last season under new manager Arne Slot.

Along with last season鈥檚 Premier League title, Jota also won an FA Cup and League Cup during his time with the English giants.

Born in Porto, Jota also played for the Portuguese national team, helping his country win the Nations League title in 2019 and 2025.

Tragically, he got married just last week to his partner Rute Cardoso and the couple have three children.

They shared pictures of the day on social media in front of the altar with their children.

In the caption, they said: 鈥淛une 22, 2025. Yes to forever.鈥

The Instagram post received over 190,000 likes and over 1,000 comments, including love heart emojis from fellow Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and Natalia Becker, the wife of goalkeeper Alisson.

Once the news started filtering through the football community, there was shocked and devastated reactions across the globe.

Prominent reporter Fabrizio Romano tweeted: 鈥淟iverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother have both passed away due to traffic accident, reports Marca. Deepest condolences, support, and thoughts are with those involved, his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.鈥

Liverpool reporter Lewis Steele wrote on X: 鈥溾極h his name is Diogo鈥. Desperately heartbreaking. Rest in peace Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.鈥

Podcast Anfield Edition said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e at an absolute loss for words right now. Heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with the wife, children, family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother.鈥
