A boulder fell on the Gap Road in Idukki, part of the Munnar-Bodimettu stretch of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway, on Wednesday morning.
There were no vehicles on the highway when the incident occurred, avoiding casualties, according to officials. However, the incident resulted in slight damages to the road, they said. The rock was later removed from the road on the same day.
This is the fourth such incident in two months, according to the officials. A recent report by the Devikulam tahsildar to Idukki District Collector V. Vigneshwari had said that there were major landslip threats on the Gap Road. The report had also recommended temporary traffic bans on the road during rainy seasons.
As of now, night travel and roadside parking were prohibited on the road when red and orange alerts are issued in the district.
鈥淭here are high chances of rocks falling on to the highway at any time. Several tourist vehicles are constantly using this route. Without proper precautions, the road is not safe for traffic during the rainy season,鈥 said a senior Revenue department official.
