In a strong signal of India’s unwavering commitment to its Himalayan neighbour, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi is on a four-day official visit to Bhutan, aimed at reinforcing the robust defence ties and strategic synergy between the two nations. On July 1, 2025, General Dwivedi held key engagements in Thimphu, including courtesy calls on His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the revered former King. The top Indian General also held detailed discussions with Lieutenant General Batoo Tshering, Chief Operations Officer of the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA), focusing on regional security challenges, capacity building, and avenues for deeper military cooperation. India-Bhutan Military Bond Gets a Boost General Dwivedi’s itinerary included a visit to IMTRAT (Indian Military Training Team) – a key pillar of India’s military presence in Bhutan – as well as Project DANTAK, the vital infrastructure arm of India’s Border Roads Organisation in the Himalayan kingdom. He also made a stop at the Wangchuk Lo Dzong Military Hospital and interacted with students and faculty at the Wangchuk Lo Dzong Military School, reaffirming India’s focus on defence education and joint training initiatives. Spotlight on Gyalsung National Service A standout moment of the visit came at the Jamtsholing Gyaltsen Academy in Tashichhoeling (Samtse), where General Dwivedi was briefed on Bhutan’s flagship Gyalsung National Service programme. The COAS interacted with Bhutanese instructors and reviewed the academy’s infrastructure and curriculum—highlighting India’s keen interest in supporting Bhutan’s youth empowerment and nation-building efforts. Strategic Neighbour, Trusted Partner The high-level military visit comes at a time when regional geopolitics remains fluid, especially in the wake of China’s increasing assertiveness. India’s sustained outreach to Bhutan – one of its most trusted allies – sends a clear strategic message. The Indian Army continues to play a pivotal role in capacity enhancement, training and joint preparedness with the RBA, as the two countries stand shoulder to shoulder for peace and security in the region.
