Russell Martin warned over rocketing Rangers expectations as boss told Celtic tussle will bring 'enormous pressure'

Russell Martin has been handed a warning over rocketing expectations at Rangers – especially if he lands big-name signings. Max Aarons is the first summer arrival for the new 49ers era in Govan – with Lyall Cameron already a done deal pre takeover. He is set to be joined in Govan by Joe Rothwell who will swap the Cherries for a permanent stay in Glasgow. The midfielder is well known to the group having played a key role at Leeds United last term as they returned to the EPL. Leicester City stopper Conor Coady – as exclusively revealed by Record Sport – is also on the brink of a move north, while the likes of Jamie Vardy have been mentioned as a potential option. A host of other names including Chelsea kid Ishe Samuels-Smith have also been mentioned as potential arrivals and former Stoke City boss Tony Pulis reckons expectations will go through the roof if he ‘brings big names in’. Speaking to Fruity King , Pulis explained: “Russell Martin is at a massive, massive football club and that comes with expectations. If he does bring big names in, that will go through the roof. “Brendan Rodgers has done an unbelievable job at Celtic and Russell will be under enormous pressure to get closer to them next year. “Martin has already brought Max Aarons on board from Bournemouth and Joe Rothwell is set to become the second addition from the Cherries as he continues to put his stamp on things at Ibrox. ” Rangers are ready to offer Coady a long-term deal to get a move over the line. He would come with vast experience and leadership qualities, and Pulis has told him what he can expect when he touches down. He said: “There are one or two teams that have improved immensely behind Celtic and Rangers which has made things more competitive, I鈥檓 sure Conor Coady will have lots of options. “If he ends up at Rangers then he will see that it鈥檚 a fantastic club with fantastic support, then it鈥檒l be about trying to play a part in the competition with Celtic which we know is not easy.” On Vardy, he added: “If Jamie Vardy went to Rangers he would be joining a huge rivalry, they have new owners and will want to invest into the team to make things more competitive.” Tune in to Hotline Live every Sunday to Thursday and have your say on the biggest issues in Scottish football and listen to Record Sport’s newest podcast, Game On , every Friday for your sporting fix, all in bitesize chunks.
