Man dragged his wife down the stairs before punching her 'ten times'

A Wrexham man who dragged his wife down the stairs before punching her “about ten times” has been jailed. Barthomiej Swedroski, 36, admitted three separate offences of assault and was today jailed for 20 weeks, Caernarfon Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Ryan Rothwell said the couple, from Poland, had been in a relationship. Last November Swedroski was laid off from work and began drinking a lot. You can sign up for all the latest court stories here

He assaulted Martyna Swedroski three times at the Atlea Estate, New Broughton, Wrexham. In the first incident on November 5 the defendant hit her several times in the face. She got a nosebleed and a scratch on her right eyebrow.

Then in January this year the defendant got drunk again, they argued and the same complainant said she was leaving.

However, Swedroski pushed her off their bed and bent down next to her on the floor, said Mr Rothwell. “He grabbed her head with both hands and hit her head on the floor three or four times, and then he spat in her face,” he said.

Afterwards Swedroski tried to convince Martyna it had been her fault because she provoked him, said Mr Rothwell. In the third incident on April 10 the couple had another argument.

The defendant grabbed Martyna’s arms, spat in her face twice and pulled her down the stairs by her legs, said Mr Rothwell. He tried to push her out of the front door.

But they ended up in the kitchen where he punched her “about ten times,” the court heard. She was knocked to the floor and Swedroski pulled her hair, hit her head and strangled her, said Mr Rothwell.

He took her phone but she got it back and rang police. Matthew Dunford, defending, said his client had not been in trouble before these “ugly” and “serious” offences.

The judge Her Honour Nicola Jones told the defendant, who appeared via a video link from HMP Berwyn where he has been on remand: “It’s clear that Martina has tried to support you through the period when you lost your work, and you were trying to drink in solace, and you retaliated by abusing her physically – spitting in her face, punching her and banging her head on the floor.”

She said the aggravating factors include the offences having been committed under the influence of alcohol and degradation due to the spitting.

The judge jailed Swedroski, now of no fixed address, for 20 weeks for the last assault, based on his overall criminality. She also gave him one-week, concurrent jail terms for the other two assaults. He must also pay a 拢154 court surcharge.
