There is a new update about the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which has been in news recently. As per reports, this expressway will have Asia’s largest wildlife corridor for safe animal passage. For the unversed, the much talked about expressway is expected to drastically reduce travel time from 6.5 hours to 2.5 hours. Additionally, the expressway will feature six to twelve lanes, advanced safety measures, and modern facilities – which also includes rest areas every 25 to 30 miles. Having Asia’s longest wildlife corridor means that it will feature underpasses, tunnel and elevated roadways for the purpose of animal crossings. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has recorded regular use of the corridor by elephants using their camera. Additionally, the infrastructure will feature non-intrusive yellow lighting, sound barriers to reduce noise pollution and vegetation planted all around main structures. There will also be special fencing done to prevent animal entry. With this initiative, the government is expecting a drop in the number of roadkill incidents. Meanwhile, the roads will also feature state-of-the-art infrastructure – which will include over 110 underpasses, five rail overbridges, and four major bridges. It will also include 16 strategically located entry and exit points. With a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h, the route promises safer and faster travel. With the coming of this expressway, towns like Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur are expected to see a rise in business and footfall. Also, popular hill destinations like Mussoorie, Rishikesh, and Haridwar will become easier to reach, making weekend travel more accessible.
