The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning to anyone heading abroad over the next few weeks, as they need to be aware of how to stay safe and healthy while they’re away from home. As we’re heading towards the peak of summer travel, the UKHSA has listed crucial recommendations for anyone with a trip planned this month. In a clip shared online, Anjali Pai, the Border Health Lead at the UKHSA, explained: “Before we go on holiday, there are some things we can all do to reduce the risk of us becoming unwell. These provide comprehensive detail on each country and any health risks you need to know about are available. Additionally, contacting your local GP before venturing abroad can help make you aware of any concerns. Pai added: “There are also some travel vaccines that are really crucial if you’re travelling to certain countries. Things like hepatitis A and typhoid can be easily prevented by a vaccine.” It’s also advised to always have tissues at the ready in case of sudden coughs or sneezes. Bringing insect repellent to tropical destinations known for mosquitoes is also a common-sense decision that will make your holiday a lot more bearable. Bringing long-sleeve tees can also be an easy way to help hold back the insect-tide. Preventative measures to stave off illnesses such as the common cold can also make or break your holiday. Maintaining your hand hygiene is crucial for this – ensuring you wash your hands for 30 seconds with warm water and soap, particularly before meals and after using the loo. Finally, Pai ends by saying: “Safe sexual health is something we should all be practising when we are abroad by using condoms.”
