UKHSA issues health warning to anyone with holidays booked in July

Summer is in full swing. And whether you’re jetting off for a romantic weekend in Paris, embarking on a 10-day Italian adventure, or soaking up the sun for two weeks in Thailand, it’s important to know how to keep safe and healthy while exploring new destinations.

As July ushers in the height of the holiday season, many Brits are set to travel abroad in pursuit of cultural experiences and pristine beaches. However, venturing into unfamiliar territories comes with its own set of hazards, which is why the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has released some key guidance for those planning to travel this month.

Anjali Pai, Border Health Lead for the UKHSA, emphasised the importance of preparation in an online video, stating: “Before we go on holiday, there are some things we can all do to reduce the risk of us becoming unwell. First of all, you can check the Travel Health Pro Website which has got really good information on travelling and things to do before we travel.”

She also recommended consulting government advisory websites for updates on travel to various countries. She said health risks and advice can change, so it’s a good idea to stay informed even if you’re revisiting a familiar country, reports Surrey Live.

Anjali advises checking with your local GP to ensure you’ve arranged any necessary travel vaccines. She said: “There are also some travel vaccines that are really crucial if you’re travelling to certain countries. Things like hepatitis A and typhoid can be easily prevented by a vaccine.”

Nothing dampens the excitement of a luxury hotel stay abroad quite like falling ill from a bug picked up on the plane. To help avoid this, the agency suggests several preventative measures.

Top of the list is hand hygiene – washing your hands for 30 seconds with warm water and soap, particularly before meals and after using the loo. Another straightforward tip is to keep tissues handy in case of coughs or sneezes.

If you’re heading to a tropical destination or an area known for mosquitoes, it’s wise to arm yourself with repellent and wear long-sleeved clothing and nets to prevent bites. Lastly, Anjali reminds travellers: “Safe sexual health is something we should all be practising when we are abroad by using condoms.”

Upon returning to the UK, if you fall ill shortly afterwards, it could be due to something contracted while away. Therefore, if you or anyone else in your party exhibits similar symptoms, it’s recommended to seek medical advice.
