Less than two days after the tourism minister boasted that Malta now has 13 Blue Flag beaches, the Fajtata beach in Marsascala was closed owing to a sewage spill into the sea, the PN said. “From Blue Flag to Red Alert in under 48 hours! This is yet another structural failure that reveals how the government has done nothing for years to protect and maintain the country鈥檚 infrastructure, even more so in light of an ever-growing and uncontrolled population,” the PN said. It warned that water quality, public health, and Malta鈥檚 reputation as a tourist destination were being put at risk due to a lack of serious investment in basic infrastructure. It noted that swimming bans were also imposed for some days in Sliema鈥檚 Qui-si-Sana, Fond Ghadir and Chalet areas, Xlendi beach in Gozo and St Thomas Bay. The PN called for a serious national plan to address the ever-growing pressure on the infrastructure. The statement was signed by Mario de Marco, shadow minister for tourism, Joe Giglio, shadow minister for the infrastructure, Rebekah Borg, shadow minister for the environment and Ryan Callus, shadow minister for Energy, Research and Innovation.
