The Walking Dead’s Dead City to feature villain as ‘ruthless’ as Alpha and the Governor

Scott Gimple, the head of The Walking Dead universe, has given fans a glimpse into the upcoming spin-off series, Dead City, featuring Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in a post-apocalyptic New York, reports the Express . In an exclusive chat with Reach Screen Time, Gimple talked about the show’s new villain, the Dama, played by Lisa Emery. She is shown as an ally to the Croat, portrayed by ZÌŒeljko Ivanek. Gimple explained: “She has aspects of other characters. You can see a dash of the Governor in there, you can see a dash of Alpha in there. But she would appear on the surface much more reasonable than Alpha – but it’s very much on the surface. “She’s just as ruthless as Alpha, certainly just as controlling but a stark contrast to her and how she presents it. Also, she does make deals.” While the Dama shares traits with past villains of The Walking Dead universe, Gimple highlights that her story is uniquely different, being “such a contrast” to previous baddies and “formidable in an interesting way”. “She is incredibly reserved, incredibly controlled, she’s pretty disciplined, she has an incredibly specific goal and within this season, she feels like she and the city has an antagonist that she needs to repel and the way towards that is very political,” said Gimple revealing her character nuances. He added further insight: “She very much has the vibe of someone in power, who has to make some sacrifices, has to create some alliances, has to strong-arm some other people.” The executive producer has lifted the lid on how the Dama has been “pulling the strings” of many characters in a gripping manner, likening her to an arch manipulator viewing others as mere pawns. Discussing the dynamics between characters, he revealed: “I think she sees Negan as a like a queen in chess, just like he can do anything.” Delving deeper into character control and power plays, he added: “He’s one of the most valuable pieces and he needs that and the question is: how can she control Negan? But the Dama is a very smart, very ruthless person.” Speaking highly of the cast, Gimple commended Ozark and Jessica Jones star Emery for her “brilliant” performance and noted her commanding presence on-screen. UK fans are keenly anticipating the arrival of season two of the AMC series on Sky Atlantic and NOW this month, following its US premiere back in May. The new series picks up a year after the first season concluded, with Maggie back from New York. The Bricks are compelled to align with the New Babylon Federation in the face of dwindling ethanol supplies due to moth infestation, embarking on a mission to Manhattan for methane resources. In a parallel plotline, Negan finds himself under the Dama’s thumb in New York as they brace for a clash with the New Babylon Federation’s forces. Although receiving a mix of reviews, The Walking Dead: Dead City continues to expand the universe of its successful original show with yet another spin-off. The move to New York City and the focus on fan favourites Maggie and Negan have undoubtedly been a boon for the show. Discussing the potential of a third season, Gimple remarked: “I certainly hope so” and quipped: “Everyone isn’t wiped out at the end, so there could be.” The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 is set to debut on July 10 on Sky Atlantic and will be available to stream on NOW
