ITV's The 1% Club puzzles viewers over question that's 'impossible' without clue

The 1% Club is a game show that shows how clever you are compared to the general public. The ITV programme is hosted by comedian Lee Mack and leaves many of us shouting answers at the box.

The show starts with 100 contestants who are battling for a prize pot of £100,000. Contestants answer a series of logic-based questions, rather than general knowledge or trivia. The questions are designed to test IQ, reasoning, and problem-solving skills, with each question getting progressively harder.

Each question is based on the percentage of the British population who got it right in a survey (e.g., a “90% question” is one 90% of people got correct; a “1% question” is one only 1% got right).

Contestants are eliminated if they answer incorrectly – and a recent question stumped almost everyone. So would you be able to get it right?

The question was: “If you remove all the underlined letters from the sentence below, what word can be spelt if you rearrange all of the remaining letters?

“ONE SELLING FRESH SALMON.”

See if you can solve the anagram – and you can even set a 30 second timer if you want to replicate the show environment in your own home.

To make things a bit easier, you may also want to grab a pen and some paper.

Still struggling? Let us give you a hint: the four-word sentence is another clue in itself. Think carefully about what “one selling fresh salmon” might mean, and you’ll arrive at the answer.

Be warned – as we’re about to reveal the answer below. Stop scrolling unless you want to see spoilers!

If you remove all the underlined letters, you’re left with: “ONESIGFRHM.”

Then take a look at the original sentence “one selling fresh salmon” – and one word should emerge in your mind when you look at the letters.

If you answered fishmonger, you are correct! Commenters on the TikTok video were divided on the question.

While some admitted it was “impossible” for them to solve, others argued it was “so easy”, especially for a question deemed too tough for 99% of people.

One person said: “This is impossible.” Another added: “Couldn’t figure it out, went to the comments for the answer. Didn’t even see the four words staring me in the face as a clue.”

However, someone else stated: “It’s easy if you read the clue in the sentence.”
