Toyota Aqua Spotted Testing In India, Fuels Buzz Around Next-Gen Hybrids | Watch

Toyota Kirloskar Motor India is investing heavily in hybrid vehicles, focusing on both strong and mild hybrid technologies.
Having said that, a Japan-exclusive Toyota Aqua hybrid hatchback was seen on Indian roads recently, sparking curiosity.
However, this model won’t be launching in India. It’s believed Toyota is using the Aqua to test hybrid components for future models like the new-gen Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and their upcoming seven-seater versions.
A video shared by 91Wheels on YouTube shows the car driving on a highway in Gurgaon, Haryana. Interestingly, the car’s front and rear Toyota badges were hidden with black covers. Apart from this, there was no other badge or camouflage, making it clear that Toyota was not trying to disguise the shape of the vehicle.

Testing Future Hybrid Tech
The Toyota Aqua is being used to test advanced hybrid components likely intended for upcoming Toyota and Maruti Suzuki models. According to Cartoq, reports suggest this could include the next-generation Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara, and their future seven-seater versions.
Though the Aqua was earlier sold in some countries as the Toyota Prius C, it was pulled back due to slow sales. However, in Japan, it still runs strong, thanks to its impressive hybrid system.
What Powers the Aqua?
The Toyota Aqua is equipped with a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Together, they produce 114 bhp and 141 Nm of torque. It also features a special bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery – the first of its kind used in a production car – located under the rear seat. The transmission is handled by an e-CVT.
Will it be Launched in India?
Toyota has no plans to bring the Aqua to Indian showrooms. Instead, the company is using it as a testbed to refine hybrid systems for future models. The new seven-seater Urban Cruiser Hyryder is in development and will rival the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and the upcoming Grand Vitara seven-seater.
