India’s IT giant Infosys has urged its employees to “maintain work-life balance,” raising concerns over potential health hazards of working overtime. Infosys flagged this issue in a personalised email sent to staff requesting them to maintain standard working hours (9.15 hours a day), five days a week. Infosys’ campaign comes at a time when its co-founder Narayana Murthy is recommending an extended work hours for India’s youth to scale up the growth trajectory. Murthy had recommended a 70-hour work week, citing it was crucial for India to compete at a global level. However, Infosys has launched a campaign urging employees to avoid long working hours while working remotely, citing health risks and stressing the need to maintain a healthy work-life balance. “We must work for 9.15 hours a day for five days a week, and if we overshoot this while working remotely, it prompts a trigger,” ET quoted an employee who received an email from the company. These emails were reportedly sent to employees whose work hours extended the company’s prescribed limit. Infosys is keeping tab on employees’ work hours and is reportedly sending details to concerned staff members who have worked beyond their mandated work hours. The report highlights information about remote working days, total hours worked and daily average hours. The HR department has been tasked with keeping a track of employees’ work hours while they are working from a remote location. “While we appreciate your commitment, we also believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for both your well-being and long-term professional success,” says the HR communication reviewed by the financial daily. “We understand that work demands and deadlines can sometimes lead to longer hours. However, it is important to maintain the balanced work-life schedule to enhance productivity and overall happiness.” The HR note also highlights the importance of taking breaks during work hours and reaching out to managers if there is any need for support. “Take regular breaks during your workday; Let your manager know if you are feeling overwhelmed or need support with reviewing priorities. Speak to your manager about delegating tasks or redistributing some responsibilities as appropriate; Take time to recharge during off hours, minimising work-related interactions whenever possible,” the correspondence further adds.
