Passport warning as Brits urged to check pages 3 weeks before holiday or risk being turned away

Brits planning a getaway are being urged to inspect their passport pages at least three weeks before departure to avoid disappointment. Travellers must ensure their documents are free of rips, marks or anything the Passport Office would deem as damage or risk being turned away.

A passport is not only essential for international journeys; it serves as identification well. But there are certain conditions where your passport could be deemed unsuitable for use.

Damage is one such disqualifying factor. GOV.UK warns: “If your passport is damaged you must replace it,” further cautioning travellers, “you may not be able to travel with it.”

Criteria set by HM Passport Office for considering passports as damaged include:

Consequently, travellers will need to apply for a new passport well ahead of their trip. It’s advised to do this at least three weeks before the intended travel date due to the processing time required for issuing a new passport.

For online passport applications

To apply online, one should head to gov.uk/apply-renew-passport. Essential requirements include a digital photo, a valid payment method (credit or debit card), and the current passport for those renewing. Proof of identity and citizenship is also necessary.

The fee for an adult passport is £94.50, while a child’s passport costs £61.50.

If you need help with the online application, local Post Office branches can assist. Their team will:

However, it’s important to be aware that there is an additional fee for this service.

Postal applications

For those who prefer the traditional method, paper passport application forms are available from nearby Post Offices, which allow for postal submissions. Remember, applying by post can take longer than completing the process online.

You must send a properly completed application form, along with your support documentation, two photographs, and the appropriate fee in the post.

Post Office staff are on hand to help ensure your application form is complete and correct, but please note you’ll need to provide your own pictures for this option, and there will be an additional cost involved.

Cash, debit or credit cards are all accepted methods of payment.

Fast-track applications

Typically, you can expect your new passport within three weeks following processing and dispatch. Nonetheless, if the passport office requires further information, the process may extend beyond this timeline.

If the standard duration threatens to overlap with your travel plans, GOV.UK provides options: “You can pay to get a passport urgently if you think the standard service will take too long.”

For urgent processing, making an appointment at a passport office is necessary:

One day premium – This service is priced at £222 (or £235 for a 54-page frequent traveller passport) One week fast track – An adult passport costs £178 (or £191 for a 54-page frequent traveller passport), while a child passport is priced at £145 (or £158 for a 54-page frequent traveller passport)
