Leading Scientists Gather in Rio for BRICS+ Science Week

Dozens of prominent scientists from BRICS+ nations will deliver lectures during the upcoming BRICS+ Open Science Week, part of the NAUKA 0+ project.

The event aims to showcase cutting-edge research and foster international scientific collaboration across critical fields.

Organized by Russia鈥檚 Ministry of Science and Higher Education and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), with support from the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the event also receives backing from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro City Hall, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The program features an international science communicators forum, the NAUKA 0+ festival, Innovation Day, exhibitions, school outreach initiatives, scientific shows, film screenings, guided walks with researchers, and master classes.

Lectures will span diverse and vital scientific frontiers. Attendees will explore quantum technologies and their modern applications, contemporary approaches to combating lung diseases, and the complex world of viruses. New concepts in unmanned aerial vehicle design and plant biotechnology will be presented, alongside discussions on the development and industrial applications of rovers. Significant focus will be given to applied reactor research, digitalization in healthcare, biosafety protocols, augmented reality technologies, advanced materials science, and the future of medical implants.

The event aligns with BRICS priority areas, including food security, sustainable agriculture, energy sovereignty, health preservation, sustainable development, artificial intelligence advancement, and space exploration. Quantum technologies feature prominently, coinciding with the UN-declared International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

Representatives from numerous prestigious institutions will participate, including MSU, RAS institutes, the Kurchatov Institute, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Zaryadye Park, St. Petersburg State University, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Rosatom, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Far Eastern Federal University, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Roscosmos, Sechenov University, and the Skolkovo Foundation.

NAUKA 0+, initiated in 2006 by MSU Rector V.A. Sadovnichy, is one of the world鈥檚 largest science communication projects. Within Russia鈥檚 ongoing Decade of Science and Technology, the festival seeks to attract youth to research, inform the public about scientific achievements, and engage scientists in tackling societal challenges. The BRICS+ Open Science Week extends this mission internationally, aiming to inspire broad audiences and strengthen the global science popularization community.
