Alicante schoolyards go green

The Alicante City Council is taking steps to make schoolyards more sustainable, eco-friendly, and healthier. The ambitious project aims to make schoolyards in Alicante infant and primary schools greener by planting trees and flowers.

The renaturalisation project will be carried out in 14 Alicante schools, and 135 trees have already been planted. The project aims to benefit the children by bettering the air quality and promoting urban biodiversity, as well as encouraging the schoolchildren to play in and interact with nature.

The Vice Mayor and the Councillor for the Environment, Manuel Villar, has said that 鈥渢he initiative responds to the growing need to adapt the educational spaces to the challenges of the climate and foment the consciousness of the environment from an early age.鈥 Continuing on the topic of the school playgrounds, Villar said, 鈥淪choolyards, traditionally dominated by cement and asphalt, are being transformed into spaces where children can learn about local plant life, enjoy natural shade, and develop their creativity in a friendlier environment.鈥

The program, which has now been in play for four years, is being carried out by the Alicante City Council and the Green Zone of the Council for the Environment. It will not only continue to incorporate new trees into the yards, but also diverse species of plant life and natural play elements for the children to learn and enjoy.
