Kate Garraway makes 'tough' money admission after caring for late husband Derek Draper

Kate Garraway has admitted it鈥檚 鈥渢ough to balance the budget鈥 amid her late husband鈥檚 extensive medical expenses. Kate spent a huge amount of money as she cared for Derek at home in the final years of his life after he was struck down with COVID in 2020 and she insisted she wants to use her profile to raise awareness for other carers. Speaking to The Mirror at the King鈥檚 Trust Awards with TK Maxx and Homesense, Kate said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely tough to balance the budget, I feel like carers often don鈥檛 have a voice so I鈥檓 here to shout about it and the costs that go unnoticed. “I wouldn鈥檛 want to be the chancellor right now with the costs going on overall right now.” Kate previously disclosed that she had been left with huge debts after caring for Derek, who contracted long COVID. The former political lobbyist died in 2024 after a long battle with the effects of catching the virus, with Kate caring for him at home prior to his passing. She has also been working to pay off debts left by Derek鈥檚 now defunct psychotherapeutic company Astra Aspera. Kate鈥檚 spokesperson previously told MailOnline: 鈥淜ate has met all that the liquidators of Derek鈥檚 company have asked for and more over the past four years. 鈥淐aring for Derek and supporting her family when Derek could no longer run his own businesses has taken a huge financial toll on her but she鈥檚 determined to put things right. 鈥淪he鈥檚 in constant contact with the HMRC to make sure she honours what鈥檚 required from Derek鈥檚 now defunct company.鈥 Kate also told Good Morning Britain: 鈥淚 am ashamed of the fact that I鈥檓 in debt. I have an incredible job that I love, that鈥檚 very well paid. “I鈥檓 not a carer travelling miles, paying their own transport to go and help somebody for minimum wage. I鈥檓 somebody that is very well paid and so I just feel a shame that I couldn鈥檛 make it work.” It comes after Kate recent said she’s still battling a “tsunami of sadness” following the death of her husband Derek Draper, and has revealed how neglecting her own health means surgery is now likely. The TV presenter, 58, has now revealed that more than a year later, she still wakes up in the middle of the night “panicking” about giving him his medicine. She told The Sun newspaper: “I still wake up in the middle of the night panicking that I haven鈥檛 given him his medicine, or that I have forgotten to move him every hour to prevent the painful contractions in his limbs. “‘The next second I realise he no longer needs that care. There is a moment of relief – that I did not let him down – before a tsunami of sadness hits. “Caring takes over your whole life. You don鈥檛 begrudge it, but you suffer because of it.”
