Belfast wedding studio behind Derry Girls scene celebrates milestone

An East Belfast woman is celebrating her 15th year in the wedding business. Lynsey Kinning started out working out of her conservatory room, with her business now generating a six-figure turnover and operating from a 1,500 sq ft showroom. Charm Wedding Studio is based on the Albertbridge Road and was established in 2010. It specialises in wedding venue styling and stationery, as well as seasonal decor installations for a range of corporate clients. Lynsey Kinning is the 3-time winner of the Northern Ireland Wedding Awards鈥 Event Decorator of the Year now and employs four staff members. She said: 鈥淲hen Charm Wedding Studio was founded, I had just got married and I was pregnant with my son Bradley. He has grown up alongside the business and, similar to raising a child, the business, like a parent, has had to adapt to an ever-changing landscape!” Speaking to Be , Lynsey added: “We provide decor for weddings and special events in loads of different venues across Northern Ireland. Whenever I was planning my own wedding, I just kind of caught the bug for weddings and just really loved it. My background was in web design, and I worked in a web firm for a couple of years, but whenever I was planning my wedding, I just realised that I wasn’t really suited for working in an office and I wanted to be a bit more creative. I built my own website and it just kind of started from there.” The businesswoman explained how weddings have changed over the years. She said: 鈥淭he Covid Pandemic forced a shift in how couples could celebrate their nuptials and Charm Wedding Studio had to modify its operations accordingly. The demand for smaller scale weddings grew and, so too, did our creativity! 鈥淎lthough the larger scale weddings have returned, Covid allowed couples a glimpse into the possibility of a more bespoke and stylised wedding. Thankfully we are experts on both!鈥 The East Belfast entrepreneur also dressed the set for a scene in TV series Derry Girls . She said: 鈥淏ack in 2019, we were appointed to dress the assembly Hall and Hunterhouse College for the infamous 1950s style prom scene in Series 2 of Derry Girls. To be involved in some way in what is probably one of Northern Ireland鈥檚 most successful TV exports was and remains a real pinch me moment and one we will never forget!鈥 Lynsey also explained what the best part of her job is. She told Be : 鈥淒efinitely meeting new people, I love meeting new people at the showroom and meeting new clients. Just listening to their story, you know that they had a dream and vision for their wedding day. Then on the day itself, getting to see their reaction as well to the venue is lovely. 鈥淢ost of my joy, my biggest joy comes from weddings and working with couples. I’ve worked with probably over 1000 couples over the 15 years. “It’s mad, it doesn’t feel like 15 years at all. Anyone in the wedding industry will tell you that time just flies because you’re constantly thinking about the next season, and the next year, and trying to keep ahead of the trends.” Discussing her plans for the future, Lynsey said: “I am keen to continue building our team and our range, as well as our corporate and commercial portfolio. We are currently servicing between 150 and 200 weddings each year, a figure that continues to increase. There is certainly no sign that Charm or the Wedding Industry at large is slowing down!” To find out more, visit charmweddingstudio.com or follow @charmweddingstudio on Instagram.
