'I queued at a motorway services for a 拢5 sausage roll and have no regrets'

If the traffic’s on your side then you may decide to give the motorway services a swerve altogether. Most people have been inside enough of them to know that quite often, you’re not exactly missing much. But there’s one services on the M6 that gets people pulling over even if they don’t need the loo and that’s Tebay Services in Cumbria. Regularly voted the very best in the UK it was only last year when Take That singer Gary Barlow hailed it ‘the Rolls Royce of services’ when he took a pitstop there on his way from Scotland to Manchester for the band’s eagerly-anticipated homecoming shows. Since then the southbound side has had somewhat of a makeover, with new food stations added, offering a Bakery, Deli, Kitchen, Hot Sandwiches and a Pie Shop. For the latest restaurant news and reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here . Each has its own menu, celebrating well-loved classics alongside exciting new dishes, all made from scratch by the team of talented bakers and chefs. And each station has its own tills too, with the aim of making it a quicker experience for motorists. It was a busy Sunday lunchtime when we called in and it was clear that the new stations are proving popular. Queues were forming at each of them but there were no flies on the staff, efficiently whizzing orders through the till while still taking the time to wish each customer a ‘good day’. On this occasion we didn’t have time to stop, so the counters were perfect for us to grab a bite to eat and a coffee before returning to our journey. After having a quick mooch around the Farmshop – knowing full well I wasn’t going to purchase the 拢19 mugs or 拢13 honey I was perusing – I headed back to the job in hand and hit the sausage roll counter. At 拢5.35 for a sausage roll and almost six quid for a steak and ale pie, we’re not talking Greggs prices here, but then this stuff really is in a different league. Once the sausage roll had cooled down from its surface of the sun temperature, it was delicious – a rather large juicy chunk of Cumberland sausage meat encased in a golden flaky pastry. The pie wasn’t quite as hot thankfully, which meant we didn’t have too long to wait to sample the succulent steak pieces, rich flavoursome gravy and quite possibly the nicest all-butter pastry we’ve ever had. The queue went down quickly too, so quickly in fact that we had time to nip to the Bakery counter, with its colourful display of macarons and other sweet treats. At 拢3.95 for a chunky slice of carrot cake and 拢4.95 for a baked cheesecake, dessert cost pretty much the same as our savoury treats – but they were worth every penny. With a takeaway coffee each we could have left armed with a week’s worth of grocery shopping and so much more. From its own butcher’s counter, to mountains of fresh fruit and veg, the Westmorland Family-owned services – their others are in Gloucester and Cairn Lodge, Lanarkshire – has pretty much got the makings of a traditional high street all in one place. The ‘Rolls Royce of services’ ain’t cheap, but when it comes to quality, this place is miles ahead.
