Madras Matinee received a mixed response at the box office upon its theatrical release in June 2025. The film goes beyond the scope of a family drama and showcases a satirical dig at the mundane and repetitive lives of the working class. Post its theatrical run, the film is now ready for an OTT release for movie enthusiasts to watch from the comfort of their homes.
Madras Matinee will start streaming on SUN NXT from July 4. The OTT giant announced the news in a formal post on its X handle. Sharing a poster of the film, the streaming network wrote, 鈥淓very street has a story. Madras Matinee follows the lives of an aging writer who is pushed by his caretaker to create a narrative about the common man instead of fiction.While unwillingly agreeing, the author tells the story of an auto driver and garbage collector from a lower-middle-class household. Although the author plainly states that such people鈥檚 lives are typically uninteresting and mundane, he finds a man named Kannan as an exception.
Kannan and his wife Shelly are depicted throughout the film as hard-working individuals who go above and beyond to provide a good life for their family. They have various goals for their children, who want to be financially independent. Kannan and his family take the stage to highlight the difficult realities of people鈥檚 lives, which are far from polished and perfect.
The film features Kaali Venkat, Roshini Haripriya, Shelly Kishore, Sathyaraj, Vishva, George Maryan, Sunil Sukhada, and others. Appreciating the film , Coolie director Lokesh Kanagaraj said, 鈥淚 watched the film and really liked it so much. Everyone has performed well. I have liked all of Kaali Venkat anna鈥檚 films, and only through Coolie, I was able to get a chance to work with him. He had performed really well, along with Sathyaraj sir and others. Anyone with a middle-class upbringing would be able to connect with the film. Especially the last shot, and a few other moments connect with us,鈥 as quoted by Times Now.
