The 1975's Matty Healy divides fans with 'insufferable' Glastonbury performance

The 1975 took to the stage on Friday night (June 27) to headline Glastonbury, with a performance that divided fans on social media 鈥 even those who are fans of the band. The group have kept a low profile in recent months with their Pyramid Stage show set to be their only show of the year. Matty Healy and his fellow band members ‘pulled out all the stops” to ensure their performance tonight is unforgettable, Somerset Live reported . The frontman emerged onto the stage clutching a pint of Guinness 鈥 which he didn鈥檛 appear to be drinking 鈥 while smoking a cigarette. And early into the set he appeared to make fun of his ex-Taylor Swift, who it is rumoured wrote some of her most recent album The Tortured Poets Department about him after their break-up. Healy made global headlines in 2023 when he had a brief romantic fling with the star, who was newly single at the time. Their relationship ended within weeks but was enough to inspire Swift to reference Healy in several songs on her latest album. On stage he told fans: “What this moment is making me realise is that I probably am the best – I’m probably the best songwriter of my generation. A poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. I wanted to remind you – this poetry, I believed in it for you.” The band then started singing their hit, Chocolate, before he then said he was joking about being a poet. The headline set divided people on social media: 鈥淢atty Healy swaggering about with a pint he鈥檚 no intention of drinking is the most annoying thing I鈥檝e ever seen,鈥 said one. Another added: 鈥淢atty Healy carrying a pint of Guinness around to appear relatable and has not drunk a single sip in 10 minutes.鈥 Another said: 鈥淭he thing which makes Matty Healy so insufferable is it’s very easy to imagine that all the b*llendery he does on stage isn’t just for the performance, but that he would genuinely sashay into Gregg’s reciting 14th century French poetry.鈥 Another added: 鈥淢atty Healy trying to play the archetypal rock & roller with the leather jacket, pint of Guinness and a cigarette while simultaneously performing some of the blandest music imaginable is quite the contradiction. About as rock & roll as Aled Jones.鈥 But others were loving the set – even if they had issues with the frontman. One said: 鈥淪ay what you want about matty Healy but he is a SHOW MAN.鈥 Another added: 鈥淚 do understand why Matty Healy is a polarising character but I think The 1975 are a brilliant band with sharp songwriting, brilliant diversity in sound & excellent musicianship. Still my favourites!鈥 A fourth said: 鈥淪hould have been all about the #1975 but Healy has decided to hijack it and turn in a car crash performance. You can see it in the bands faces. All he had to do was hold it together for one day and he鈥檚 failed miserably.鈥 A fifth said: 鈥淭he 1975 are actually pretty good! It鈥檚 just a shame that Matty Healy is an absolute weapon.鈥 It comes as a source has revealed to The Mirror that there was much less of a crowd for the 1975, with Lewis Capaldi and CMAT attracting a bigger number of people to the Pyramid Stage. Later in the show, Matty said: “Use your platform, that’s what they say. People who watch this might be disappointed at the lack of politics in this show… “We honestly don’t want our legacy to be one of politics, we want it to be of love and friendship. I don’t think we need more politics, we need more love. I know that’s really basic.” The 1975 have enjoyed considerable success with their albums ‘A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships’ and ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’. The band has been recognised with four Brit Awards, including the British Group award twice, British Album of the Year in 2019, and Best Rock/Alternative in 2023.
