Assisted suicide crosses a red line

We are facing new regulations in Malta regarding what has been euphemistically called voluntary euthanasia or assisted dying. There are justified serious reservations about the wisdom of such legislation and others have called upon the government to exercise great caution or even to reconsider. The government is proposing to assist terminally ill persons to commit suicide. There is so much wrong with this initiative that one despairs. Just off the top of my head I would say it is arrogant, disingenuous and dangerous. I cannot imagine why any politician would think that assisting your own citizens to commit suicide is a good idea. There will be some political suicides along the way. I fully agree that this further misadventure will open its own Pandora鈥檚 box. Disruption of families is being ignored, the possibility of recovery is all but dismissed. We have abandoned our Christian values. It will accelerate the fragmentation of our society. We should seek to protect life not find ways to end it. The political class do not know what they are doing and are trespassing into realms where angels fear to tread. The dumbing-down of people by incessant corporate and public messaging has turned informed consent into a farce. My guess is that, apart from a couple of conscientious objectors, the proposal will go through with a full vote in parliament. Interestingly, the regulations include this provision: 鈥淭he termination of life through assisted voluntary euthanasia shall be considered a natural death, provided that the board has verified and certified that all legal procedures have been duly followed.鈥 The intention to hide these events is curious and smacks of an attempt to protect the enablers from the social disdain that will follow them. Now, there is another important matter to consider, which is the matter of life itself. 鈥淚n the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth; And the earth was without form and void; And the darkness was upon the face of the deep; And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.鈥 And so it began. Life has mystic and transcendental origins. What we give the highest credibility to is the god we bow our head to. Science is not the source of life. Only humans talk of science. The notion of science simply does not exist, nor has relevance, in any non-human realm. Also, just to state the obvious, there is life without humanity. All other forms of life do not need humans to survive, quite the opposite. At best, science observes, names, models on the basis of mostly reliable hypotheses and puts together and implements what is necessary to satisfy our needs.
