People who have flown with easyJet in recent years may be entitled to as much as £520 in compensation, thanks to a rule some travellers may not be aware of. If you’ve ever experienced a flight delay, you’ll know how frustrating it can be. Booking a holiday can be a very exciting time, but the journey can be arduous, especially if you’re told it’ll take even longer than you anticipated. But if your flight has been met with a delay, you could be owed a cash payout. On its website, easyJet explains “you may be entitled” to compensation of up to £520 if your flight was delayed to the point that you arrived at least three hours after the original scheduled arrival time. The amount you’re entitled to is £220, or 250 euros, for flights of 1500 km or less; £350, or 400 euros, for flights within Europe of more than 1500 km, and all other flights between 1500 and 3500 km, and £520, or 600 euros, for “all other flights of 3500km or more”. To put this into context, a flight from Edinburgh Airport to Palma, Mallorca, is around 1,878km. A flight from Glasgow Airport to Bodrum, Turkey, is around 3,161km. easyJet adds that the amount of compensation will be halved if the airline “is able to offer you re-routing on an alternative flight to your final destination that was scheduled to arrive no more than two hours after your original flight arrival time, in respect of flights of 1500 km or less; no more than three hours after your original flight arrival time for all flights between 1500 and 3500km provided you are flying in Europe; or no more than four hours after your original flight arrival time for any other flights.” The most popular routes on easyJet tend to fall in the 1,500-3,500km range, so the £350 per person mark. You can claim compensation for delayed flights within the past five years within Scotland, or within six years across the rest of the UK.
