PTIKolkata: The premises of the South Calcutta Law College where a student was allegedly raped by her two seniors and a former student of the educational institute, in Kolkata. The three accused were arrested on Thursday night in connection with the case, according to officials.
Three persons were arrested on charges of allegedly raping a woman inside a law college premises in Kolkata and have been remanded to police custody till July 1, Kolkata Police said. The incident happened on Wednesday night but it came to light today. The National Commission for Women (NCW) had taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and has also sought a report from the Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma on the matter and directed him to send the report to the Commission within the next three days. 鈥淜asba Police Station responded swiftly and decisively to a complaint of sexual assault involving a female law student in Kasba. An FIR was registered without delay, and within 1 hour, all three accused named in the complaint were apprehended. They have been remanded to police custody till 01.07.2025. The investigation is being pursued with utmost seriousness, professionalism, and sensitivity. We appeal to the public and digital platforms to refrain from circulating unverified or misleading content that could hinder the judicial process or compromise the dignity of those involved,鈥 DCP Jadavpur Division Bidisha Kalita said in a statement.State Minister of Women & Child Welfare Sashi Panja said, “We stand by the woman in this situation. There should not be any politics on this.”Live EventsAs per the statement, the NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Verma expressing deep concern over the event and directed the latter to ensure an immediate and time-bound investigation into the matter under the relevant provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).鈥淪he has also stressed the need to extend full medical, psychological, and legal assistance to the victim, along with compensation under Section 396 of BNSS. The protestors raised slogans and were engaged in a scuffle with police in front of Kasba Police Station.
