Meta Recruits Top OpenAI Researcher Trapit Bansal to Boost AI Reasoning Team

Meta (formerly Facebook) has hired Trapit Bansal, a well-known researcher from OpenAI, to work on its artificial intelligence (AI) reasoning projects. According to a report by TechCrunch, Bansal will now be part of Meta’s special AI team focused on building superintelligent systems. Bansal joined OpenAI in 2022 and worked on some of its most important AI projects, including reinforcement learning and OpenAI’s first AI reasoning model called o1. He worked closely with Ilya Sutskever, one of the co-founders of OpenAI. He officially left OpenAI in June 2025, which was confirmed by OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been aggressively growing the company’s AI team and has reportedly offered pay packages as high as $100 million to attract top talent. The hiring of Trapit Bansal is seen as a big step in boosting Meta’s AI superintelligence lab. With Bansal’s experience, Meta aims to build smarter and more advanced AI models that can think and reason like humans.
