The Girl on the Train – Skin care edition?

The Girl on the Train - Skin care edition?

A girl seen with a facemask allegedly on the Delhi metro, clarifies she was on the Mumbai metro, days later.
Is the obsession with selfcare getting out of hand? The recent news of a girl practising her skincare during her daily commute, had the internet divided. Where some appreciated her for normalising skincare enough to practise it in public, others cringed at the idea of watching someone enjoy their ‘me-time’ in public.
Today’s youth or in colloquial terms, the ‘Gen Z’ are here to only play by their own rules. From challenging authority to stretching the limits of what’s considered ‘appropriate,’ they aren’t waiting for permission to take care of themselves. In a culture that has long glorified self-sacrifice and endurance, putting oneself first is often met with criticism. But should it be?
The girl in question came out in her defence, explaining that she did not do this for any views, but simply for the joy of skincare. Holding up a Tony Moly sheet mask, She also clarified that she was indeed travelling in Mumbai metro and not Delhi metro.
This ‘stunt’ could either be a bold act of self care or a calculated bid for attention, but the truth remains in it’s ability to spark a larger conversation. A conversation around the growing need for this generation to be validated via social media. A conversation around it being a war cry in the face of ‘hustle culture’, disguised as a complusilve need to pamper oneself.
An act of rebellion or a cry for attention? What do you think?
