Brothers honoured for winning Kilkenny's first All-Ireland Senior Doubles title in 27 years

Two local brothers have been honoured with a civic reception at Kilkenny County Council for their achievements in the sport of handball. Patrick and Peter Funchion, from Flaggy Lane in Callan, and representing Kells Handball Club – won the All-Ireland Senior Doubles title. It’s the first for the county in 27 years, with the last pair to achieve this being Ducksie Walsh and DJ Carey. The civic reception was held by Cathaoirleach Michael McCarthy (FF) at the request of Councillor Joe Lyons (FG) to honour the brothers, who are the sons of Betty and Pat. Councillor Joe Lyons said he was immensely proud that two Callan men could achieve such high honours. He said they were an example to all young people around the country and a credit to their families, club and community. Cllr Lyons also praised the volunteers in the background of every handball club around the county that are part of every success story. “Peter and Patrick have played handball since they could walk, went down to the alley in Callan every evening after school and every Sunday after Mass,” he said. “They have a never-say-die attitude, and their perseverance over many years led to victory. Cllr Joe Sheridan, a former member of Kells Handball Club, also praised the lads for their great success. All other councillors added their praise and admiration on their marvellous win.
