Manchester United are reportedly closing in on their second summer signing, Bryan Mbeumo.
The Reds identified Mbeumo as a target to strengthen their attack after underwhelming seasons from both Josh Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund. The pair scored a combined of seven goals in the Premier League.
With the Brentford attacker expected to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad, further additions are still anticipated. But outgoings will also need to be sanctioned, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho considered strong candidates.
With that said, MEN Sport has taken a look at the latest transfer headlines from in and around Old Trafford.
Bryan Mbeumo ‘medical’
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to have his medical at United next week. The Manchester Evening News reported this week that United were close to finalising the signing of the Brentford star following a new bid exceeding £60million.
However, the exact figure remains unclear, although reports suggest Brentford are aiming for around £63m.
MEN Sport says: This is a significant boost for Amorim and his coaching staff. So far, the club appears to be getting their transfer business both right and done early – something that could prove invaluable over the course of the season.
Securing signings before the start of pre-season gives the manager plenty of time to integrate new players into the squad, allowing them to fully understand Amorim’s demands and adapt to the team’s playing style. This early groundwork could also give them a competitive edge once the season kicks off, as players will be more settled and aligned with the manager’s vision.
Diogo Costa a ‘possibility’
Journalist Anil Kandola claims United will potentially turn their attention to signing a new goalkeeper after getting Mbeumo through the door. The future of Andre Onana has been subject of speculation in recent weeks with AS Monaco interested in his services.
Although The Manchester Evening News understands that Onana remains intent on staying at United, FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa is being monitored. Kandola adds that the Portugal international could be someone they make a move for if budget ‘allows.’
Being under contract until the summer of 2027, Costa reputedly has a release clause of €75m (£64m).
MEN Sport says: If United are able to pull this one off, it would be a major coup. Having watched Costa play for Porto last season, he made some outstanding saves and was undoubtedly one of the few shining lights for the Portuguese giants in what was a challenging campaign. Porto is all Costa has known throughout his career, so this feels like the right time to make a move abroad. At just 25 years of age, he has already proved himself on the biggest stages for both club and country over the years.
