A girl trapped in a drain in China’s Guizhou province following intense flooding in the area was found alive and unharmed on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, after being stuck for more than seven hours, according to officials. Speaking about the incident, firefighters in the southern province of Guizhou said in a statement that it occurred when the 8-year-old girl, who was on her way from school on Monday, June 23, 2025, was dragged into a drainage ditch by 鈥渞ushing waters while she was trying to pick up her lost shoe, according to NBC News. The statement further informed that the girl survived by holding onto a horizontal bar around 32 feet down in the sewage pipe.Talking about the 8 year-old鈥檚 condition following her rescue, the officials said that she was soaked from head to toe because of being trapped inside for more than seven hours. The 8-year-old, however, showed 鈥渘o obvious serious injuries. 鈥淭his first-grade girl fought against the pitch-black darkness, coldness, and constant fear with amazing calmness and perseverance. We give a thumbs-up to this brave girl,鈥 the statement further stated.Meanwhile, at least six people had lost their lives, and at least 80,000 people were evacuated by Thursday, June 26, 2025, after heavy rains battered China’s southern provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Hubei since June 17, according to the Xinhua news agency. The widespread floods triggered by heavy rain have resulted in the collapse of infrastructure in the affected areas.Towns and villages by a major river in China’s Guangxi lay half-submerged as floodwaters from a province upstream roared into the mountainous region, with the expected landfall of a tropical cyclone later on Thursday compounding disaster risk.Live EventsThe massive flooding that overwhelmed the cities of Rongjiang and Congjiang in Guizhou province on Tuesday has spread downstream to other parts of southwest China, including rural settlements in Guangxi by the banks of the Liu River, which originates from Guizhou. The Guangxi township of Meilin was the worst hit; state media reported on Thursday, with floodwaters at their peak more than 4 meters (13 feet) above what was considered safe.Even as floodwaters passed and dangerous surface runoff began to recede, southwestern China鈥攆rom Guizhou and Guangxi to Chongqing, Yunnan, and Sichuan鈥攔emained on high alert for secondary disasters such as road collapses, landslides, and hydro-dam overflows.”Rural areas face significant challenges due to limited infrastructure and resources,” said Chen Xiaoguang, professor at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu. “Strengthening these systems in rural counties will be key to reducing the long-term impact of increasingly severe weather.”Urban areas typically have a stronger capacity to respond to floods, he said, but not all cities are equally equipped. Rongjiang, for instance, is a county-level area where resources are more limited.(You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel)
