Sam Thompson reveals 'mortifying' moment with royalty in 'crazy' move

Sam Thompson has revealed he had a ‘mortifying’ moment with royalty as he topped off a whirlwind month by meeting King Charles III. The presenter and reality star was among the famous faces who attended a reception at Buckingham Palace with His Majesty on Wednesday (June 25) ahead of the King’s Trust Awards taking place on Thursday. The trust will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026. It was started by Charles, when he was prince of Wales, following his concern too many young people were being excluded from society through a lack of opportunity. Hollywood celebrity George Clooney and wife lawyer Amal Clooney were joined by fellow trust supporters. Actors Dame Joanna Lumley, Joseph Fiennes and TV presenter Dec Donnelly, one half of Ant and Dec, were also among those honouring the award winners at the reception, ahead of the official awards ceremony. Sam was among those to be invited, alongside fellow Made in Chelsea alumni Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo, as well as Strictly 2024 star Tasha Ghouri, This Morning presenter Rochelle Humes, and Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway. Taking to Instagram as he reflected on the occasion, Sam shared a picture of his official invite to the Palace and said: “Yesterday was crazy,” before admitting: “It’s been a wild month,” alongside a picture of him shaking hands with the King. He also shared the photo to his main Instagram grid, alongside a video of him in conversation with the monarch and posing around the iconic venue. Alongside the post, Sam told his followers: “Complete honour and pinch me moment yesterday to be invited to the palace. A massive thank you to @kingstrust and @theroyalfamily. I am lucky enough to be able to present an award to Taylor who is an incredibly special human. “After spending some time with him, his story is one that I think will resonate with a lot of young men his age and I know this is only the beginning for him. Also called the king ‘mate’ which was mortifying but he was cool about it!” And he was quickly flooded with messages. @anisah_x_97 said: “Love this for you Sam! You calling the King mate is the most Sam thing ever, love it!” @the_fashionflyer commented: “This is amazing Sam! And check out that line up!” @the.enchanted.dreamer commented: “That’s so awesome Sam. Did you have to fight the urge to bear hug him.” @missbliss001 wrote: “Wow, that’s SO amazing Sam, what an honour.” @michelle_food_and_lifestyle shared: “So so so well deserved.” @kellyandthecastle posted: “Oh wow Sam. 2025 is all yours.” @megan_brough added: “Aww Sam!
