Government to recruit 60,000 education sector workers in 2025 – Education Minister

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government will recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025 as part of a major effort to strengthen Ghana’s education system.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the Minister confirmed that the necessary financial provisions have been made in the 2025 national budget to support the recruitment drive.

“Mr. Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” he stated.

The announcement comes amid concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who called for an investigation into reports of teachers allegedly being mistreated during a recent protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.

Minister Iddrisu addressed the issue, clarifying that he had met with teacher representative Bafour Eric, who confirmed that financial clearance for recruitment was initially granted in May. However, due to delays in reporting, the clearance expired at the end of the year.

“They were expected to start work in August but began in September. Naturally, by December 31, the clearance had expired. They can only proceed with a renewed clearance, which I am currently awaiting,” the Minister explained.

The Education Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding posting and clearance challenges, ensuring that newly recruited personnel are effectively deployed across the country to improve learning outcomes.

He added that this mass recruitment forms part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle teacher shortages, enhance education support services, and advance ongoing education reforms to deliver quality instruction at all levels.
