US President Donald Trump had to admit his failure to fulfill one of his most popular 鈥 and ludicrous 鈥 campaign promises on Wednesday.
During the 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours and even told Fox News鈥 Sean Hannity he was 鈥100% sure鈥 he could keep that promise.
However, despite Trump鈥檚 subsequent election and inauguration in January, the war between Russia and Ukraine has continued with no real end in sight.
Trump didn鈥檛 have a decent answer on Wednesday when Austrian reporter Johannes Petrov noted, 鈥淵ou once said that you would end the Ukraine war in 24 hours. You later said you said that sarcastically.鈥
鈥淥f course I said that sarcastically,鈥 Trump replied, which prompted Petrov to ask, 鈥淏ut you鈥檝e been in office for five months and five days, why have you not been able to end the Ukraine war?鈥
At first, Trump admitted that ending geopolitical conflicts between rival countries is 鈥渕ore difficult than people would have any idea.鈥
He also played the blame game.
鈥淰ladimir Putin has been more difficult,鈥 he said about the Russian president. 鈥淔rankly, I had some problems with [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, you may have read about them. And it鈥檚 been more difficult than other wars,鈥 Trump said, before listing the various wars he鈥檚 had an easier time 鈥渆nding.鈥
Here鈥檚 a clip of the exchange.
Of course, people on social media had thoughts about Trump鈥檚 inability to end the Russia-Ukraine war in 24 hours.
And, yes, there was snark. Lots and lots of snark.
