Young Lenzie man dies after devastating cancer battle as sister leads tributes

A young East Dunbartonshire man has died aged 28 following a brave battle with cancer.

Shaun Atwal, who lived in Lenzie, passed away on Friday, June 20, leaving his family and friends heartbroken.

We previously reported how he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma – a rare form of bone cancer – in February 2021. His shock diagnosis came about after he went to medics with a broken arm.

Shaun was forced to leave his job after the cancer spread to his lungs. He was in remission for seven months before the cancer returned, and had spread to his spine.

After being told his cancer was incurable, friends and family launched a stoic fundraising effort to get him immunotherapy treatment in Japan, which raised over 拢160,000.

The proud uncle, who doted on his niece Aya and nephew Luay, has been described by his sister Luvleen as someone who “fought harder than any of us could have.”

She said: “The news I never wanted to share. Shaun, you did more and fought harder than any of us could have.

“I’m so sorry I couldn’t save you my darling brother. You deserved more.

“I will spend the rest of my life missing you. You were everything to me.”

Tributes flooded in for the young man who has been described as a “true fighter.”

One person said: “I’m so sorry. He helped me when I needed it most. May he rest in peace.”

Another commented: “Shaun鈥檚 strength was inspiring. Sending so much love to you all. He will be so missed by everyone.” While a third penned: “Heartbreaking, I literally don鈥檛 have words to explain how I feel right now, can鈥檛 imagine how you all feel, most incredible and widely loved man, thinking of you guys and your family.”

Weeks before his death, Shaun shared his health journey on TikTok, hoping to help others, and fulfilled his goal of reaching 10,000 followers.

His family have organised a celebration of his life, taking place on Saturday, June 28, at Linn Crematorium from 9am.

Luvleen added: “Please join us in remembering him.

“Shaun would like everyone looking their best on the day so we respectfully ask that you wear smart black clothing. Shaun’s friends have organised a touch of colour to mark the occasion.”After the crematorium we will be going to the gurdwara on 37 Albert Dr, G41 2PE, to say our final prayers for Shaun. If you are able to, we would love for you to join us there too.”For the gurdwara, please cover your head when in the prayer hall. For men this would be a bandana style head covering and for ladies any type of pashmina type scarf is fine.

“Ladies, please dress modestly if planning on going to the gurdwara as a mark of respect to Guru Granth Sahib Ji (our holy book). A midi-length skirt or dress is suitable if worn with tights or just trousers please.

“Shaun, we love you and miss you every day.”

There is a live stream of Shaun’s funeral service for friends and family who are unable to attend.
