The upcoming ₹716 crore Rail Manufacturing Unit (RMU) in Kazipet, Telangana, is targeted to be completed by January next year and production activity is scheduled to start around May 2026, informed Union Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw.
This was informed to his cabinet colleague, Union Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy when they met to discuss the various railway initiatives underway in Telangana on Tuesday (June 24, 2025). Mr. Vaishnaw informed Mr. Reddy that the Indian Railways intends to introduce new generation Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains to enhance short and medium-distance train travel.
The new MEMU trains, with 16-20 coaches, will be manufactured at the RMU in Kazipet, and cater to non-urban and semi-urban areas especially during festive seasons, as per a press release.
