'Do not eat' alert as popular sauce sold in Sainsbury's recalled over serious 'health risk'

A popular sauce is being pulled from UK supermarket shelves due to a potentially deadly undeclared allergen. Laoganma Black Bean Chilli Sauce is a cult favourite among food lovers, with the brand best known for its chilli oil and chilli crisp sauces. The cooking sauce is widely available in Asian supermarkets, as well as other major supermarkets in the UK, including Sainsbury’s . Manufacturers Fortune Foods Ltd are recalling a batch of the product because it contains peanuts which are not mentioned on the label, posing a potentially fatal risk to allergy sufferers, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Around one million people in the UK are allergic to peanuts, which are a common cause of food allergy. The allergy is often severe because peanut proteins, which are what cause a peanut allergy reaction, aren’t readily destroyed in the gut, meaning they can trigger a strong immune response. Research has shown that at least 46 per cent of deaths from food-related anaphylaxis since 1992 were due to peanuts or tree nuts. The FSA has issued an alert to anyone who has purchased Laoganma Black Bean Chilli Sauce with the pack size of 280g, batch code 18232 and a best-before date of March 8, 2026. The FSA said: “Fortune Foods Ltd is recalling Laoganma Brand Black Bean Chili Sauce because it contains peanuts which are not mentioned on the label. “This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts.” It added: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to peanuts, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.” A separate notice by Fortune Foods said: “We deeply regret this incident and are taking immediate steps to strengthen our labelling and quality control procedures to prevent a recurrence. “For further information or assistance, please contact our customer service team at info@fortunefoods.co.uk. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this may cause and thank you for your understanding.” The company said “not all units are affected” in the “isolated” issue. It warned: “Individuals with a peanut allergy may risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.”
