The price of a Meal Deal is rising 鈥 but not the iconic one you’re thinking of right now. Let’s face it, you hear the words 鈥渕eal deal 鈥 and you immediately think Tesco . . . but no, dear hungry Daily Star reader, other stores do them as well. One of those is Sainsbury’s, which until recently was charging 拢3.75 for a main meal item 鈥 sandwich etc 鈥 a side dish and a drink. But shock horror, they have increased the price to a whopping 拢3.95, while keeping the premium meal deal at 拢5. Although Sainsbury’s didn’t explain why it was raising the price for the second time in under a year for hungry workers looking to save money, they did claim that the supermarket 鈥渃ontinued to offer one of the best value meal deals around鈥. They said: 鈥淲e鈥檝e also recently introduced a range of new products just in time for summer, including our bestselling Picnic Triple Sandwich and build your own salad options. “This means anyone who shops with us can choose from an affordable selection of over 150 mains, 300 snacks and 400 drinks.鈥 Meanwhile, Tesco is charging Clubcard members 拢3.60 for its meal deal, while Morrisons only charges 拢4 for the same three items 鈥 which again drops to 拢3.60 if you have its version of a loyalty card called a More card. Asda fans can get Mix and Match three for two on lunch items, so prices vary in that supermarket, while low-cost supermarkets Aldi and Lidl don’t have meal deals. And on the posh end of the food scale, Waitrose charges 拢5 for its deal 鈥 although if you’re going there for a meal deal then you can probably afford twice that price. Shoppers took to social media to rage of the Sainsbury’s price hike, as one said: 鈥溌3.95 for a Sainsbury鈥檚 meal deal? The world has gone mad.鈥 And a second posted: 鈥淔uming. Deflated. Meal deals are no longer a deal 拢3.95 in Sainsbury鈥檚 now.鈥 A third said: 鈥淪ainsbury’s meal deal is 拢3.75. I go on holiday for one week. I come back. Sainsbury’s meal deal is 拢3.95 鈥 Death by a thousand cuts.鈥 While a fourth called the move 鈥渁bsolutely scandalous鈥.
