UK tourists vow to 'avoid' Turkish holiday resort amid strict crack down

Holidaymakers have slammed a popular Turkish resort for enforcing strict nightlife rules which has seen 20 venues closed in recent days. A curfew is in force in Marmaris Turkey, where venues need to switch off music by midnight. Recently authorities have been clamping down on businesses which are flouting the rules. According to local news site Hurriyet Daily News , a total of 20 entertainment venues have been closed. Initially 14 venues were shut down and 鈥渓egal proceedings were launched against individuals accused of harassment and public indecency.鈥 The venues were 鈥渇ound to be violating public order through loud music, semi-nude dance shows, torch performances and persistent solicitation of people walking by.鈥 Penalties included temporary closures ranging from three to 10 days, while two businesses were permanently closed. The move has outraged tourists, although some are in support of the crackdown. In a video on TikTok, user LifeOfLotts, a Brit who shares guides on Marmaris, shared footage of the bars closing early in the Armutalan area of Marmaris. She said: “It’s 12:20am – all the music went off at 12 and as you can see down the street, lights are off. “People are still in the bars, but it looks like they are paying their bills – this is crazy – I have never seen it like this here before. 鈥淲e did see the police drive past as well that was before 12, but lights are off here, this is Mad Boys, this was booming a minute a go, more over the road, pitch black, and then we got Chuckle Brothers, not even one light on. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not even half past 12 yet, and you can see up the road as well all the lights off in the bars. So the new rules are music off by 12 o’clock, lights off, let鈥檚 see how long it lasts鈥 hope it doesn鈥檛 last because not everyone wants to go to Bar Street.鈥 Some tourists slammed the rules in the comments section. TikTok user Darren Keith Clarke wrote: 鈥淢armaris is finished鈥 while Pusb85 said: 鈥淢armaris is finished, will be totally dead next year, I won鈥檛 be back next year.鈥 Kaz wrote: 鈥淎nother holiday destination to avoid, they will soon lose out in tourism if everyone boycotts the country!鈥 But others were in support. Kvein Wixon873 said: 鈥淓veryone should abide by the rules in that country or don鈥檛 visit or live there if you don鈥檛 like their rules.鈥 LMC added: 鈥淭his is the reason I鈥檇 never go to Marmaris, the last thing I want to see on holiday is a load of drunk Brits. I love Turkiye and been 6 times, but will never go to Marmaris. I鈥檇 be all for these new rules.鈥 Katie Marachino wrote: 鈥淚 live in Marmaris and I鈥檓 all for them enforcing the r rules. The majority of bars in Armutalan and on the beach front are sleazy and cheesy. 鈥t will have an impact on tourism but only temporarily. The majority of the bars are in a residential area.鈥 For more of today’s top stories, click here.
