The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has warned of an impending nationwide strike if the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) fails to implement directives issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC).
This follows a June 9 directive from the NLC, which ordered GTEC to restore allowances that had either been reduced or completely withdrawn from GAUA members in the previous month. Additionally, the commission was asked to initiate discussions on the existing inconsistencies in the Single Spine Salary Structure and to reverse a directive concerning office-holding roles.
Despite these clear instructions, GAUA says there has been little to no progress made. In a recent statement, the Association announced it is giving the government until the end of June to address these concerns or risk industrial action.
In a related development, the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has also issued a seven-day ultimatum to GTEC. The union is demanding the immediate cancellation of a directive compelling traditional public universities to induct representatives of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) onto their Governing Councils.
