Our Yorkshire Farm's Amanda Owen praised for 'schooling' decision with kids

Our Yorkshire Farm’s Amanda Owen has been lauded by her followers for providing a glimpse into the unique education her children receive on their farm. The 50-year-old, also known as The Yorkshire Shepherdess, gained widespread recognition through social media, leading to her Channel 5 documentary series featuring her life with ex-husband Clive and their nine offspring. Amanda often shares glimpses into their family life, and recently, she delighted fans with charming photographs of her daughters engaging in farm life activities such as feeding chickens, horse riding, and swimming in a river. She captioned the snapshots: “There’s schooling and there’s schooling. “I know that they’ll go into class with a faint whiff of horse and scurf on their socks but they’ll also have big smiles and a story to tell,” reports Leeds Live . Her approach to parenting won applause across the board, with personalities like Channel 5’s Ben Fogle contributing, saying: “This could be Iona.” To which Amanda responded: “I can’t bring myself to stop them, I should be firm and put a stop to this….going to school smelling of horse, with scurf on your legs, hay on your jumper and hairs in your socks. “But I remember how much I wished for something like this when their age.” Echoing the sentiment, another admirer commented: “A perfect way to start the school day.” One fan remarked: “Your kids are having a wonderful childhood.” While another noted: “What they learn from the farm far surpasses anything learnt from a classroom, Fantastic family you have.” Earlier this year, Amanda disclosed her decision to homeschool her son Sidney during an interview on ITV’s Lorraine, where host Lorraine Kelly observed: “As if you’ve not got enough to do, I know one of your kids, Sidney. He wants to be a farmer, doesn’t he? “So, you’ve decided that you’re gonna homeschool him because he’ll be learning. But that’s a huge commitment again, Amanda, to homeschool one of your kids.” Amanda acknowledged the challenge, recounting a recent balancing act: “Totally is. Yesterday, I actually had to have words because he had a maths tutor thing, but he also wanted to help Reuben fell a tree. So, it’s like that balance, ‘What’s the most important thing, what’s the most pressing thing’.” Accounting for her large family, Amanda emphasised the need for equilibrium: “It’s all about striking the right balance. Nine children, they’re all very individual characters. They’ve all got their different ideas and different skillsets, and for Sidney, he’s quite focused. He knows what he wants to do and he’s very, very aware of the fact that he needs an education.” She elaborated on her philosophy: “An education can mean many things, and I believe that an education can mean a work ethic, empathy, an ability to be able to turn your hand to anything, and to be able to communicate and to be able to grow up to be a decent human being. I think sometimes that can be really overlooked. “Sidney is absolutely living his best life, he’s enjoying himself. He’s been involved in the farm, he’s been involved with his older brother Reuben, who is his hero with engines. I just feel like you sometimes have to take a little bit of a step into the unknown. It was a scary prospect, but I think it was the right one.” Our Yorkshire Farm is available to watch on 5
