Eguavoen belives Super Falcons will win WAFCON.
Former Super Eagles head coach, Augustine Owen Eguavoen, has expressed strong confidence in the Super Falcons’ ability to clinch their tenth AFCON title, following their impressive 0-0 draw against hosts Portugal in a pre-tournament friendly on Monday.
Eguavoen, who recently concluded his fourth stint as the Super Eagles’ interim head coach and successfully guided them to the 2025 AFCON, spoke highly of the Super Falcons’ current form and potential.
“We’re the best in Africa, one of the best in the world, without mincing words. We’ve got a great mix of young and experienced players, and they’ll make us proud,” he stated, looking ahead to the WAFCON 2024 tournament, which kicks off on July 5th in Morocco.
Reflecting on the Falcons’ previous WAFCON outing where they finished fourth.
Eguavoen added, “I was in Morocco the last time. They finished fourth, which was unfortunate, but that’s behind us. We’ve made progress, from the World Cup to the Olympics, and I believe this team can go all the way.”
Nnadozie’s heroics secure stalemate in Lisbon
The Super Falcons, eyeing a historic tenth continental title, showcased both flair and steel in their friendly against Portugal at the Estádio José Gomes.
Despite arriving in Lisbon less than 24 hours before the match, the nine-time African champions displayed no signs of fatigue or lassitude, standing firm against the Portuguese in a performance that underscored their readiness WAFCON.
The match saw moments of early pressure from the hosts, with a sixth-minute back pass from Christy Ucheibe nearly leading to a goal for Diana Silva.
However, the ever-alert Chiamaka Nnadozie was quick to react, confidently plucking the ball from a pull-out in the ninth minute.
At the other end, the dynamic Francisca Ordega skillfully set up captain Rasheedat Ajibade, whose smart turn and shot nearly caught goalkeeper Ines Pereira off guard.
Nnadozie truly asserted her dominance in the 24th minute with an epic save.
The Nigerian contingent is set to depart from Lisbon for Casablanca on Wednesday, where they will face Ghana’s Black Queens in another friendly match this Sunday, further fine-tuning their preparations for AFCON 2024.
