5 Malaysians opt to remain in Iran

Foreign minister Mohamad Hasan said 24 individuals returned from Iran last weekend following the evacuation order from Wisma Putra.PETALING JAYA: There are only five Malaysians, comprising four students and a businessman, still in Iran, says foreign minister Mohamad Hasan.He said they had signed a letter of undertaking to remain in Iran despite the government鈥檚 earlier call for all Malaysians to leave the country amid the escalating conflict in the region, Bernama reported.鈥淭he evacuation process for Malaysians in Iran was completed on June 21. However, four students 鈥 three in Qom and one in Esfahan 鈥 decided to remain, along with a businessman.鈥淭hey agreed to sign a letter of undertaking, stating that they wanted to remain (in Iran for now). They also expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra for the help rendered,鈥 he told reporters after an event here today.Twenty-four individuals who were evacuated from Iran returned safely home on June 22.The group comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens and one Singaporean national.Malaysia鈥檚 ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, who led the group, told the media they had to travel about 1,000km by land to exit Tehran.
