One holiday hotspot in Portugal has recently introduced regulations for behaviour in public places, with hefty fines dealt out to those who choose to ignore these rules. The city of Albufeira rolled out the rules on June 24, issuing a document to locals and tourists over the local laws which must be followed in the area. Albufeira is a popular area of the Algarve, with the wider region estimated to have received around 5.2 million visitors back in 2024. The beaches, its Old Town and even its nightlife are some of the attractions for UK tourists who travel to Portugal every year for some time in the sun. In the latest Foreign Office warning, it said: “The municipality of Albufeira has introduced a Code of Conduct which bans inappropriate behaviour in public places. “Check out the rules that are now in force. If you break the rules, you could be fined on the spot from between 150 and 1800 euros.” According to the Code of Conduct issued by the municipality, fines range from €150 to €1,800 dependent on what rule has been broken. A total of 15 rules are on the list which has been drawn up by the local authorities in Albufeira, entitled “Albufeira rules for public places.” READ MORE: Portugal declares ‘containment zone’ with thousands of UK tourists warned Regulations outlined on the document range from acts such as “Spitting on the ground” to “Cooking in public spaces,” with some rules which could surprise some UK tourists. For example, a fine which could do some damage to your holiday money could be for something such as using a card beyond a permitted area in the city, which could see you set back up to €750. Other rules with a hefty price tag if you fail to obey involves “excessive noise.” If you are deemed to be ‘disturbing the peace,’ expect a charge between €300 and €1,500.
